Home > Fauna > Beneficial Insects > Hoverfly

These little insects are a gardener's best friend because they are very good at controlling (parasitically) a variety of insect pests - aphids in particular.

Attract these little critters by planting daisies, marigolds and thyme and your garden will be well defended. Companion planting such flowering plants with those that are susceptible to aphid attack is particularly useful and is something any home gardener can do. Even if you're not particularly interested in organic gardening, companion planting to attract hoverflies will drastically improve your pest situation, reducing your need to buy expensive pesticides - do be aware though that many pesticides will kill hoverflies and other beneficial insects so if using pesticides, always follow the instructions and only spray pests when they're visibly causing harm.
