Mulch is any material (organic or inorganic) that is placed on the soil around plants.

Tip

Never mulch right up to the stems of plants, this can cause collar rot and will eventually kill your plants.

Living Mulch

Some plants have a low, spreading habit so they shade the soil around them just like other mulches.
